If I didn’t have my music I’d probably be dead: TOP FIVE ALBUMS to be stranded on an island with

Obviously a difficult task to choose only five albums, but it needs to be done. It’s like asking what you would have for your last meal. I think I would attempt to eat myself to death and beat them to the punch. Anyway, that’s a different topic for a different day. Today’s second post is for you music junkies to sift through the piles of songs and CDs stored in your brains’ juke box. If you’re like me, music is your life and without there is no reason to live. That’s a little bit of an exaggeration, but I think you get the point.

Now, imagine yourself cast away on a desert island with only your thoughts and your music to keep you company. You need to take into consideration that this will make or break your mood. This is the closet contact to the outside world you might have for the rest of your natural life. Every song will bring with it some sort of emotion so the last thing you want is to have a sappy ass CD reminding you of all the times fighting with your significant other (or maybe that’s what helps your survive) and keep you depressed the whole time. My list is below (with explanations for each). Chances are I will look at this list tomorrow and think differently, but as of today this is what I want to listen to, so fuck right off!

Now it’s time to hear yours. I’m genuinely curious so please, please take the time to add your thoughts. Have a go!

  1. Outkast – AT Aliens (in my opinion, best front to back hip-hop album of all time)
  2. Bob Marley – Legends (pure happiness music. You need that when alone)
  3. RJD2 – Dead Ringer (So many amazing sounds, every track brings something special)
  4. The Rolling Stones – Hot Rocks 1964-1971(It’s the fucking Rolling Stones. Come on!)
  5. Eminem – Slim Shady LP (Endlessly funny and totally timeless)

I disapprove of these restrictions: I’m taking 6 records, most double albums or larger!

    1) RjD2 – The Horror – if you don’t like this record, fuck you.

    2) Beastie Boys – Sound of Science (double album best of)

    3) The Clash – Sandinista – This triple album has everything, punk, folk, dub, hip-hop, classic rock, violins, boys’ choirs, instrumentals…

    4) Charlie Paker – Ornithology (3 disc set)

    5) MC5 – The Big Bang, Best of the MC5

    6) Warren Zevon – Excitable Boy

    1. War – Black Man’s Burdon
War jumps back and forth between frantic funk and smooth soul with deep rhythms and prose. Moving, dance-inducing, fun.

    2. Radiohead – The Bends
In my opinion their best work, it’s a thorough psychedelic melodrama but lacks the tense melancholy of later-day Radiohead (I find this to be a good thing).

    3. My Morning Jacket – Okonokos
Guitars have never sounded so supersonic. Reverb-soaked grooves combine with shreddy riffs and beautiful harmonies to produce a real f’n mind-blower.

    4. Beck – Sea Change
A masterpiece of laid-back alt-country, Beck shows off his sweeter side and proves that no matter how down and out you might get, one can always find time to chill.

    5. Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense
I think this album is what 1983 thought 2009 would sound like. David Byrne’s troupe of funk-rock-new-wave misfits at their tightest.
